Multivitamin, Omega-3 and Minerals Explained
- Multivitamin: combines vitamins and minerals, sometimes with other ingredients. The U.S. National Institutes of Health says there is no standard formula, and that multivitamins cannot take the place of eating a variety of foods (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). Check that your multivitamin, plus other supplements and fortified foods, does not push you over a nutrient’s upper limit.
- Fish oil and omega-3: fish oil is a source of EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fats found in fish and other seafood. The same NIH source says the FDA advises no more than 5 g a day of EPA and DHA combined from supplements, and that high doses may increase bleeding risk, especially with blood thinners (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). Fish oil is not suitable if you have a fish allergy.
- ZMA and CMZ: mineral formulas. ZMA is zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, and CMZ is calcium, magnesium and zinc.
