QUICK ANSWER

  • Whey protein: adds protein with few calories (about 21 to 25 g of protein for roughly 110 to 140 calories per scoop in the tubs we sell).
  • Mass gainer: adds a lot of calories, with protein and carbohydrate, for people who cannot eat enough.

Label facts for one of each are in the side-by-side table below.

People often ask which one to buy, and the honest answer is that they do two different jobs. Whey protein is for getting enough protein. A mass gainer is for getting enough calories. Which one you need depends on what is missing from your day, so this guide explains both in plain words, puts the label facts side by side, and shows you how to choose.

Every product on this page is genuine and comes from a well-known brand. Peak X is an authorized distributor. Prices update automatically, and the figures in the table come from the product labels.

What Each One Does

Whey protein: protein with few calories

Muscle is built from protein, and when you train, your body needs protein to repair and rebuild it. You can get protein from normal food: chicken, eggs and meat, or paneer, dal and beans if you are vegetarian. You do not need a powder. A whey protein powder just makes it easier. One scoop of the whey tubs we sell gives about 21 to 25 g of protein for roughly 110 to 140 calories, which is hard to match with food, because paneer, nuts and beans bring a lot of extra calories along with the protein.

So whey is for people who want more protein without adding many calories. It is not a weight-gain powder: it supports the protein side, and your total food decides your weight.

Mass gainer: extra calories for people who struggle to eat

A mass gainer is protein plus a large amount of carbohydrate, so it carries far more calories per serving. It is meant for people who are very lean, eat a lot and still do not gain, or who have a fast metabolism and want to bulk. Weight only goes up when you take in more calories than you burn, and a mass gainer is a simple way to add those calories in a glass.

Because it also has protein, a mass gainer is not “only carbs”, but the main point of it is the calories, which is why the servings are big.

Whey Protein vs Mass Gainer: Side-by-Side

Four whey tubs and two mass gainers we sell, from four well-known brands, using label figures. Compare the protein, the calories and the price per serving, not only the price of the pack.

Product Type Serving size Calories per serving Protein per serving Price Price per serving
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 2 lb Whey protein 1 scoop (about 31 g) 120 24 g Rs 9,490 (about Rs 13.6 per gram of protein) about Rs 327 per serving
MuscleTech Nitro-Tech Whey Gold 5 lb Whey protein 1 scoop (about 33 g) 120 24 g Rs 20,000 (about Rs 12.1 per gram of protein) about Rs 290 per serving
BiotechUSA 100% Pure Whey 2 kg Whey protein 1 scoop (28 g) about 108 21 g Rs 17,500 (about Rs 11.7 per gram of protein) about Rs 246 per serving
MuscleBlaze Biozyme 1 kg Whey protein 1 scoop (36 g) 140 25 g Rs 8,200 (about Rs 11.7 per gram of protein) Currently out of stock about Rs 293 per serving
BiotechUSA Hyper Mass 4 kg Mass gainer 1 scoop (about 65 g) 254 20 g Rs 14,450 (about Rs 11.8 per gram of protein) about Rs 237 per serving
ON Serious Mass 6 lb Mass gainer 2 scoops (336 g) 1,250 with water 50 g Rs 9,990 (about Rs 25.0 per gram of protein) about Rs 1,249 per serving

Servings per pack come from the label where we have it: 29 for the ON 2 lb, 71 for BiotechUSA Pure Whey and 28 for the MuscleBlaze 1 kg. Others are worked out from the pack weight, so they are “about”: 69 for MuscleTech 5 lb (2.27 kg ÷ 33 g), about 61 for Hyper Mass (4 kg ÷ 65 g) and about 8 for Serious Mass 6 lb (2.72 kg ÷ 336 g). BiotechUSA Pure Whey calories are worked out from 385 kcal per 100 g and a 28 g scoop, so they are “about”. Serving sizes differ a lot: one serving of Serious Mass has about ten times the calories of one scoop of whey. Flavours and pack sizes can differ, so always read the label on your own pack.

Which One Fits You?

Choose whey protein if…

  • you eat enough calories already and want more protein;
  • you want protein without adding many calories;
  • you find it hard to cook or carry chicken, eggs or paneer every day;
  • this is your first supplement. See Best Whey Protein for Beginners in Nepal.

Choose a mass gainer if…

  • you are very lean and nothing seems to help you gain weight;
  • you have a fast metabolism and cannot eat enough to bulk;
  • you want a simple way to add calories to a meal plan;
  • you can handle a big, filling drink. A smaller option such as Hyper Mass is easier to start with than a 336 g serving.

Choose neither if…

You are already eating enough calories and protein from normal food. Supplements are optional. They are here to make things easier, not to replace meals.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you have diabetes, a kidney condition or any other medical condition, are pregnant or take medication, speak to your doctor before using whey protein or a mass gainer.

Food First: You Can Do Both Without Powder

For protein, the natural sources are chicken, eggs and meat. If you are vegetarian, paneer, dal, beans and soya chunks work, but they carry more calories for the protein they give, so it is harder to reach your protein without also adding calories.

For calories, the usual Nepali sources are rice, potato and roti. Adding oats makes it better. If you are not ready to use a mass gainer, you can raise your calories with bigger portions of these.

If you want the easy way, a supplement does the same job in a glass. Whey and mass gainers are made from milk protein plus carbohydrate, not from anything artificial in the protein itself. They are simply a convenient way to reach what you are missing.

Questions and Answers

What is the difference between whey protein and a mass gainer?

Whey protein is mostly protein with few calories: about 21 to 25 g of protein and roughly 110 to 140 calories per scoop in the tubs we sell. A mass gainer is protein plus a lot of carbohydrate, so one serving can carry hundreds or over a thousand calories.

Which is better for gaining weight, whey or a mass gainer?

A mass gainer, because it carries far more calories per serving, and weight only goes up when you take in more calories than you burn. Whey is mainly for protein, not for adding weight.

Which is better for muscle?

Muscle is built from protein and needs enough protein and enough total food. Whey is an easy source of protein with few calories. A mass gainer also has protein, but its main job is to add calories.

Do I need whey protein if I eat chicken, eggs and meat?

No. Food can give you the protein you need, and a powder is optional. Whey just makes it easier and adds fewer calories than many other protein foods.

Is whey protein vegetarian?

Whey comes from milk, so many vegetarians who eat dairy use it. Check the pack for the vegetarian mark and the ingredient list. If you do not eat dairy, whey and most mass gainers are not for you, because they contain milk.

Can I take whey protein and a mass gainer together?

A mass gainer already contains protein, so check the totals on both labels before you combine them. If you are not sure how much you need, speak to a doctor or a qualified nutritionist.

Which is cheaper?

Compare the price per serving and the price per gram of protein in the table above, across all four whey brands, not the price of the pack. A mass gainer serving gives far more calories, so the two are not a like-for-like price comparison.
